The Committee of 500

Dear Committee of 500 Members,

On January 30 I stepped down from being chairman and board member of the Committee of 500 because I have been appointed to the Spotsylvania County Planning Commission. If I were to remain on the C500 board it could create the appearance of a conflict of interest since C500 often takes positions on Planning Commission cases.

Although I am sad to end my C500 board involvement after many years, I believe the planning commissioner role will give me a platform from which to support smart growth principles.

C500 Vice Chair Pete Kolakowski will finish my term as chairman. Pete is a well-seasoned C500 board member so I know he will do a great job.

While I have your ear, here is what C500 has been doing since the November election:

The C500 board is monitoring Spotsylvania’s budget process, which will culminate in the budget adoption in April. Given the new Board’s fiscally-conservative majority, it will be even more important than usual for C500 to advocate for funding levels that enhance our citizens’ quality of life. The C500 board encourages you to attend the March 29 budget public hearing at Courtland High School.
C500 board representatives are meeting with each of the supervisors (those who are willing) to talk about our priorities for the year, to learn about each supervisor’s goals, and to ideally find areas of common ground with the four new members.
All of the supervisors are seeking interested citizens to serve on a variety of commissions. For available positions (as of January 10) visit here.
